What to Expect from Your First Lip Filler Treatment
Lip fillers do more than pump up thin lips. The cosmetic injection also fixes asymmetry, smooths out age-related lip lines, and creates a more defined lip line.
At Montclair Rejuvenation Center in Verona and West Caldwell, New Jersey, our medical aesthetic experts, led by Dr. Kelly Distefano, specialize in cosmetic injections like Botox® and fillers. These quick treatments provide consistent results and require little to no downtime.
If you’re considering lip fillers to enhance your appearance, you may want to know what to expect from your first filler treatment.
The initial consultation
Before we perform any cosmetic treatments, our experts do an in-depth consultation. We want to learn all about your concerns and goals. We also ask about your medical history and the types of medications you take. This information helps us create a plan to help you achieve your desired look with little risk of side effects.
If your lips are your primary concern, we may recommend lip fillers. We use hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers from Juvederm® and Restylane® to enhance lips. Each brand offers lip fillers with different strengths and consistencies to achieve specific results.
We discuss the types of fillers with you, decide which one is the right choice, and then develop your injection plan.
Lip fillers are temporary, and results can last a year or longer.
Getting your injections
We review your lip enhancement plan at your injection appointment to ensure it meets your goals. We then clean your skin and lips with an antiseptic agent and apply a numbing cream to minimize pain during the injections.
Using a thin needle, we inject small amounts of lip filler into different areas of your lips, including the edges, the curve in the upper lip under the nose, and the outer corners. We gently massage the filler into the lips as we go.
You may feel some pressure during the session, but no pain. The injection part of your lip filler appointment takes about 30 minutes, but you may spend about an hour at the office for prep and post-injection monitoring.
You can drive after your injections and resume most of your usual activities. However, your lips may appear swollen and red immediately following treatment, and you may prefer to head home to ice them and rest.
Lip filler aftercare
Swelling and bruising following lip filler may last a few days. During the initial healing process, continue to ice your lips periodically for up to 10 minutes.
Don’t touch or pucker your lips or drink from a straw, and avoid lipstick and other lip creams immediately following the procedure. We also recommend no strenuous physical activity for up to 24 hours.
We schedule a follow-up visit about two weeks after your initial injections to see how you’re doing.
Results from lip filler injections are immediate and may last a year or more. We can refill your lips as needed to help maintain your look.
