How to Get Rid of Facial Spider Veins

How to Get Rid of Facial Spider Veins

Facial spider veins are harmless but may affect your appearance. If makeup isn’t working to cover up your facial spider veins or you want a more long-term solution, Dr. Kelly Distefano and our team of aesthetic experts at Montclair Rejuvenation Center have a solution for you.

Causes of facial spider veins

Spider veins are tiny visible blood vessels that create red, purple, or blue web-like lines on the skin, affecting the legs or face. Spider veins aren’t actually veins but damaged capillaries, venules, or arterioles — the very tiny blood vessels that connect the arteries and veins in a branch-like fashion.

The veins become visible when they weaken and expand. The cause of spider veins is still unclear, but it may occur due to changes in hormones, an injury, or genetics. Sun damage and skin conditions like rosacea may also cause facial spider veins.

Other than the changes in appearance, facial spider veins don’t usually cause any symptoms or health problems. But they can affect self-esteem and self-confidence because of how they affect your looks. Luckily, you can get rid of them.

Treatment for facial spider veins

If you’re unhappy with the web of lines on your face, you may want to consider a photo facial. This is our primary treatment for facial spider veins, using intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy.

IPL uses pulses of light at varying wavelengths to heat the skin, targeting areas of pigmentation. For spider veins, the light hones in on the red, blue, or purple lines, heating the blood vessel and causing it to collapse. Your body then reroutes blood through other vessels, and the visible lines fade away.

Depending on the size, number, and location of your spider veins, we may recommend 3 to 6 photo facial sessions every month or so to get the best results. However, it’s not uncommon to see improvements in the skin after the first treatment.

We also perform photo facials for skin rejuvenation, treating hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and lines and wrinkles. There’s no downtime following facial spider vein treatment, but you may experience some redness in the treatment area.

IPL therapy increases skin sensitivity, so you need to take extra precautions when in the sun during the healing process. Apply sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to prevent hyperpigmentation and scarring.

Keeping your skin clear

Since the cause of spider veins isn’t always known, preventing new lines from appearing isn’t always possible. However, protecting your skin from sun damage may reduce risk. We also recommend quitting smoking, staying well hydrated, and filling your diet with nutrient-rich foods.
